The Biggest Coastal Cleanup Day In San Diego (And Possibly The World)

Saturday, September 16th marks a pretty awesome day for coastal cities all over the world. On this international “Coastal Cleanup Day,” people step out onto their beaches and do their best part to remove all debris from the environment.

And we aren’t joking when we explain this happens all. over. the. world.

In the past, over 13,000 locations have gotten involved in cleaning up almost 30 million pounds of trash!

Check out www.CoastalCleanUpData.org to see the data entered in from coordinators across the globe and for international totals!

And of course our fine city adores our beaches, so San Diego wants to be as big a part of this day as any.

That’s why organizations like the Surfrider Foundation and I Love A Clean San Diego are joining forces to organize a large and local cleanup right here, in Ocean Beach.

They’ve partnered up with Sand CloudShore Buddies and $1 for the Ocean to make it a Saturday of not only helping our beautiful beaches, but also having some good old fun in the sun.

On top of “taking out the trash,” there will be a photo contest and opportunity to win a Sony Point & Shoot camera (see instructions for this contest in the image below), a “bling your bucket” contest, and more.

Plus, the first 100 volunteers will get a free t-shirt, and Sand Cloud and Shore Buddies will each donate $1 for everyone who joins in on the action.

And in case you’re wondering just how effective our sweet city can be, last year over 7,500 dedicated San Diegans across the county explored and beautified beaches, canyons, creeks, and parks and worked to remove over 150,000 lbs of debris!

So come out and join San Diego – heck, join the world – in cleaning up our beautiful beaches Saturday, September 16th!
