Doctors Without Borders Brings Traveling Speaker Series To La Jolla And San Diego
The international medical humanitarian organization, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), is bringing its special speaker series to La Jolla and San Diego.
MSF On the Road: A Voice from the Field concluded its tour of Washington and Oregon in September and will now make its way through 20 cities in California—starting in Chico on September 28 and concluding in San Diego in November.
A behind-the-scenes look at MSF’s fieldwork
Presented by Karen Stewart, an MSF mental health officer who has worked with MSF for 15 years, A Voice from the Field provides a behind-the-scenes look at MSF’s fieldwork and what life is like as an aid worker, exploring the challenges of bringing life-saving medical care to the most dangerous and remote areas of the globe.
Karen first worked with MSF in 2004, and in the 15 years since, has been on 11 assignments in nine countries across Africa and Asia, most recently in Uzbekistan working with a tuberculosis project in 2015.
Both events are free and open to the public. It will provide an in-person opportunity for La Jolla and San Diego locals to find out more about MSF’s work around the globe.
In the presentation, Karen will tell stories from working in an HIV/AIDS clinic in Lagos, Nigeria to working in Aceh, Indonesia after the 2004 Tsunami. One story is about a young girl in Papua New Guinea, who was attacked and raped on the only road leading from her house.
It took the young girl weeks to build up the courage to visit MSF’s clinic as she was too sacred to walk that road again. But with help from Karen and her team of local councilors, the young girl was able to face her trauma and eventually walked the road without fear.
