Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero Pulls Back The Curtain On Its Lineup Through Labor Day

Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero at the Manchester Grand Hyatt continues to draw sellout crowds and with the summer season set to kick off in San Diego, the city’s most iconic outdoor cinema is releasing its full lineup through Labor Day.

In true Rooftop Cinema Club fashion, the newly released schedule offers something for virtually every genre, including sing-alongs, pet-friendly screenings and open-caption films, along with celebrations of summertime, Rooftop Romance, Harry Potter’s birthday, Comic-Con’s return to America’s Finest City and special anniversary films.

RCC Embarcadero also plans to celebrate Summerween, a mid-summer twist on Halloween, while also introducing a series of films centered around the signs of the Zodiac.

The complete lineup thru Labor Day is available online, and details on Rooftop Cinema Club’s unique offerings and special screenings can be found below.

The Heat Is On

“The Heat Is On” in San Diego each Thursday in July, and Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero will celebrate summertime heating up with a series of movies dedicated to “bringing the heat.” It’s a special queue of films that includes Tom Cruise at the controls of his F/A-18 in the original Top Gun; the fifth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, Fast Five; cops chasing down criminals in Bad Boys; two different types of summer loving in Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again and Wild Things, and Spike Lee’s seminal look at America on the hottest day of the year in Do the Right Thing.

Rooftop Romance

Rooftop Cinema Club’s standing motto is “Love, Peace and Great Film” and this August, RCC is putting the spotlight on LOVE with “Rooftop Romance,” a series highlighting the genre that will never go out of style with some of its favorite cinematic romances. On select days in August and early-September, Rooftop Cinema Club will showcase love stories of all kinds from the timeless Hollywood classic Casablanca to more modern takes like the Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga remake of A Star is Born, Love Jones, Crazy Rich Asians, Pretty Woman, and a plethora of additional Romance and Rom-Com films to round out the Rooftop Romance slate.

Happy Birthday, Harry!

In honor of Harry Potter’s birthday on July 31, Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero is throwing a two-month birthday party to celebrate the big screen’s favorite fantasy wizard. Each of the eight films that comprise the Harry Potter film collection will be screened in order with one showing per week every Sunday in July and every Saturday in August.

Signs of the Zodiac

Starting in July, Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero is starting a new tradition celebrating films, actors and actresses with birthdays and namesakes connected to the signs of the zodiac. Beginning with the start of Leo Season on July 23, RCC will be highlighting movies made by or starring their favorite cinematic Leos, including Leo DiCaprio (of course), Sandra Bullock, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and others. Virgo season starts on Aug. 23, and at Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero that means celebrations of Zendaya, Keanu Reeves and more.

Halloween in Summer

Halloween doesn’t arrive until October 31, but it isn’t the only month to enjoy Halloween movies, so this summer Rooftop Cinema Club is gearing up for the spooky festivities by playing some of its favorite Halloween flicks throughout Labor Day Weekend. Visitors will have a chance to laugh at the zaniness of Practical Magic, feel the nostalgia of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown, or just have Friday the 13th scare the living daylights out of them.

2022 Movie Anniversary screenings

July and August at Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero are also stacked with iconic 2022 movie anniversary screenings, including the 25th anniversary of the Nic Cage blockbuster Con Air, the 30th anniversary of high school horror comedy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the 35th anniversary of Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze hit, Dirty Dancing. And speaking of Swayze, RCC is going “Crazy for Swayze” on August 18, the date that would have marked the late actor’s 70th birthday, with a screening of Point Break.

Book-to-screen adaptations

August 9th is National Book Lovers Day and to commemorate the occasion, RCC Embarcadero is screening a duet of two beloved book-to-screen adaptations with Baz Luhrmann’s visionary take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and the beginning of an unforgettable partnership in Jonathan Demme’s classic version of The Silence of the Lambs. If you’re a book lover, you may also like RCC’s July “People’s Choice” screening, where fans choose which book-to-movie adaptation to screen at the Rooftop! Vote here by June 30, and the winning film will be announced July 1.

Tickets for all films through Labor Day are on-sale now!

See you there, San Diego!
