Birch Aquarium’s New Exhibit Dives Deep into the Mystery of the Oarfish

Birch Aquarium just unveiled a stunning new exhibit that’s as captivating as it is mysterious.

Oarfish: Recent Discoveries from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Collection invites us to explore the fascinating folklore and science behind the rarely seen Short-crested Oarfish—featuring a preserved specimen found right here in San Diego, on Grandview Beach near Leucadia.

This deep-sea creature, often associated with sea serpent myths and believed by some cultures to predict natural disasters, is now on display in a beautifully immersive “underwater palace.”

It’s a rare opportunity to view one up close—and to reflect on how nature’s mysteries shape our stories and understanding of the world.

Where Myth Meets Marine Science

The exhibit also showcases a preserved ribbonfish, known as the King-of-the-Salmon, another deep-sea species tied to local legend. Both specimens come from Scripps’ world-renowned Marine Vertebrate Collection, offering a glimpse into the ocean’s depths through the lens of cutting-edge research and historic lore.

You can dive deeper into the exhibit’s themes of unpredictability and human connection to the sea—perfect for ocean lovers, science enthusiasts, and anyone with a curious mind.
