‘Desert X’ In Coachella Valley Is Worth The Road Trip. Here’s Why…

For those of you who don’t know, “Desert X” is a really cool, contemporary, funky art exhibit in the Coachella Valley that’s running until April 30th. If you and your crew are looking for a fun road trip, this is it! It’s about a two and a half hour drive from San Diego and once you get there, you’re immersed in some pretty eclectic art which uses the desert landscape as its canvas.

According to desertx.org, Desert X is the “curated exhibition of site-specific work by established and emerging artists, whose projects will amplify and articulate global and local issues that may range from climate change to starry skies, from tribal culture and immigration to tourism, gaming, and golf.”

Sounds pretty rad to us.

No matter what your style is, one of the exhibits at Desert X is bound to peek your interest… and if anything, you will definitely have an experience to talk about.

If you’re having trouble imagining what it’s all about, let me take you on a little tour:

Drive past a billboard that was created to exist with the nature behind it, created by Jennifer Bolande. Continue on to see Phillip K. Smith III’s “Circle of Land and Sky” which uses 300 geometric reflectors to abstract the views of the Coachella Valley.

And watch out! You may not even realize it, but you could be standing above an underground bunker housing a huge-scale JFK figurine, created by Will Boone and influenced by the death of John F. Kennedy.

So fill up the gas tank, grab some munchies and head out! Desert X installations are free and you don’t need a ticket. They are open daily from sun up to sun down, but some installations do have odd hours so make sure to check Desert X’s ‘Visit’ page before you leave!
