WILDCOAST Unveils Ocean-Inspired Mural in Pacific Beach Celebrating Coastal Conservation

WILDCOAST is unveiling a new ocean wildlife-inspired mural on the wall of retailer Ananas in Pacific Beach, created by renowned San Diego muralist Jon Hamrick.

The piece was developed in partnership with Beautiful PB and the PB Arts Center as part of the neighborhood’s expanding public arts district, and it rounds off WILDCOAST’s 25th year of working to protect and restore coastal and ocean ecosystems. The unveiling event is free and open to the public.

The “Protect the Locals” Campaign

The mural is part of WILDCOAST’s campaign “Protect the Locals,” which aims to raise awareness about the incredible wildlife and coastal treasures in San Diego’s backyard.

The waters off San Diego are a blue highway for iconic species like gray whales, humpbacks, blue whales and a variety of dolphins, along with leopard sharks, great whites, sea turtles, octopi, Garibaldi fish, harbor seals, and sea lions.

The landmark mural honors the beauty and fragility of San Diego’s coastline and precious marine life while reflecting the impact of WILDCOAST’s ocean conservation work across the region for the past 25 years and those to come.

The Artist and Partnership

Jon Hamrick, a San Diego favorite known for his vibrant coastal murals, collaborated with WILDCOAST and Beautiful PB, a grassroots nonprofit leading the PB Murals Program and newly opened PB Arts Center. The Arts District now features more than 50 murals and public art pieces, with this installation joining the collection.

After leading the creation of the vibrant Oceanside Odyssey mural in the pedestrian tunnel of Oceanside Transit Center – a community-selected installation completed in November 2025 – Jon brings that same energy and coastal-inspired vision to his new Pacific Beach project.

WILDCOAST’s Conservation Impact

WILDCOAST helps protect some of the most threatened coastal and marine ecosystems in California and Mexico – spanning 38 million acres of ocean habitats, wetlands, mangroves, islands, and Marine Protected Areas.

The organization also advances climate solutions through blue carbon restoration and prevents solid waste from reaching the Pacific Ocean, including stopping 317,000+ pounds of plastic, tires, and trash at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The mural serves as a reminder of the coastlines, wildlife, and communities WILDCOAST is working to protect. Brief remarks by WILDCOAST’s Executive Director, Serge Dedina, PhD and an official ribbon-cutting will mark the unveiling.
