Celebrate Setsubun at the JFGM With Food, Music, and Good Vibes

The Japanese Friendship Garden is hosting its Setsubun Festival, and it’s one of those events that feels both celebratory and peaceful at the same time. Expect family-friendly fun, live performances, and a few traditions that might just bring you a little extra good luck for the year.

The Story Behind Setsubun

Setsubun is a Japanese celebration that marks the beginning of spring – kind of like a fresh start. One of the main traditions is mamemaki, where people throw roasted soybeans to “drive out the bad spirits” and invite good fortune in. It’s fun, it’s a little chaotic (in a good way), and yes, you’ll get to throw beans too.

Inside the Festival

The garden really comes alive for this one. Expect:

  • Taiko drumming (always a crowd favorite)
  • Cultural performances and demos
  • Hands-on activities and crafts for kids
  • Tasty food and drinks from local vendors
  • Lucky bean-throwing ceremonies throughout the day

It’s a great excuse to spend the day outside, soak up some culture, and enjoy one of the prettiest spots in the city.

Make a Day of It

Even if you’ve been to the Japanese Friendship Garden before, experiencing it during a festival is a whole different vibe. Between the peaceful pathways, koi ponds, and the energy of the event, it’s the kind of thing that feels special without being too over-the-top.

Bring the crew or roll solo – either way, you’ll leave feeling a little lighter. The festival runs from morning through the afternoon, giving you plenty of time to wander, participate in the bean-throwing ceremonies, and soak up the atmosphere.
