Sophie Ancel Brings Needle-Felted Landscapes to Alliance Française San Diego

There’s an art exhibition coming to Alliance Française San Diego that’s genuinely worth clearing your calendar for. French-American artist Sophie Ancel is bringing her needle-felted textile landscapes to the space in a solo show called Voyages Feutrés – and if you haven’t encountered her work before, this is a great introduction.

Building Worlds Out of Wool

Ancel has spent over ten years refining a practice that’s hard to describe until you see it in person. She builds dimensional landscapes entirely from wool – layered, textured, and surprisingly immersive. Think sweeping coastal vistas and hidden valleys that feel less like flat artwork and more like terrain you could wander into.

The work sits somewhere between craft and fine art, and it pulls you in the way a good landscape painting does – only with a warmth and depth that fiber brings in a way paint simply can’t.

An Artist Rooted in the San Diego Community

Ancel’s work isn’t new to San Diego. Her pieces are stocked in the San Diego Museum of Art gift store, and she’s shown in galleries across the city as well as in France. She also teaches needle felting, so she’s as much a part of the local arts community as she is an exhibiting artist.

Voyages Feutrés runs from April through June, giving us a solid two months to visit the show at the Alliance Française San Diego space in University City.

Meet the Artist at the Opening Reception

The opening reception is a great chance to see the work fresh and meet Sophie in person. If you’re curious about her process or just want to experience the pieces before the crowds, this is the night to show up.

See you there!

Come experience Voyages Feutrés and spend an evening surrounded by some truly one-of-a-kind textile art in the heart of University City.
