Watch Contemporary Ballet Get Made – Live, Onstage
If you’ve spent any time in San Diego’s arts scene, you’ve probably heard of The Rosin Box Project – and if you haven’t, this is a great place to start.
Their latest production, Incubator Lab: The Making, Magnified, runs for three nights only at the Light Box Theater at Liberty Station, and it’s unlike anything else on a San Diego stage right now.

The Process, Not Just the Performance
Most of the time, by the time a dance performance reaches the stage, all the creative decisions have already been made. Incubator Lab flips that entirely. This production puts the creative process center stage, with dancers workshopping new choreography live and making real-time adjustments right in front of the audience.
San Diego’s premier contemporary ballet company, The Rosin Box Project, brings this production to the Light Box Theater at Liberty Station, an intimate space that makes the whole thing feel even more immediate. It’s the second production of their 2026 season, and a chance to see the company’s work from an angle most audiences never get.

A Different Kind of Night Out
It’s a creative lab made public. Dancers try out ideas, test choreography, and rework sequences right there onstage, so what we’re watching isn’t a finished piece – it’s a piece in the act of becoming one. Ideas get shaped, adjusted, and sometimes completely reconsidered in the moment.
That kind of transparency changes how the art form reads. Seeing how something gets built, rather than arriving only at the finished product, makes contemporary ballet feel immediate and human in a way that’s hard to replicate in a standard performance.
For those of us who follow The Rosin Box Project closely, this is a chance to see the work at its most raw. For those newer to contemporary ballet, it’s a genuinely natural entry point.
Plan Your Visit
Tickets are $49.87 after fees for this three-night run. With limited performances and an intimate venue, locking in a spot sooner rather than later is the move.
