Step Into the World of Toulouse-Lautrec at Film Night at MOPA@SDMA
The Museum of Photographic Arts at the San Diego Museum of Art is hosting a special film screening of John Huston’s classic 1952 film Moulin Rouge – and the timing couldn’t be better.
The screening is tied to SDMA’s current featured exhibition, Cafés and Cabarets: The Spectacular Art of Toulouse-Lautrec, making for a genuinely immersive evening that connects the film directly to the art on the walls.

Snacks, a Photo Booth, and a Classic Film
Doors open in the MOPA@SDMA Atrium for movie snacks and a photo booth before the film begins in the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater.
It’s a relaxed, atmospheric evening that gives Gallery Collective members a chance to experience the exhibition in a whole new way. Please note that this event is open to Sponsor, Ambassador, and Circle members and above.
A Film Worth Watching Twice
John Huston’s Moulin Rouge is a vivid portrayal of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s life and his turbulent journey through the Paris art world – the cabarets, the characters, and the creative fire that defined his short but celebrated career.
Watching it alongside the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition adds a layer of context that makes both the film and the art feel richer.
What’s on the Walls at SDMA Right Now
Cafés and Cabarets: The Spectacular Art of Toulouse-Lautrec explores the life and legacy of one of Belle Époque Paris’s most iconic artists.
Working in the modern art form of color lithography, Toulouse-Lautrec immortalized the cabaret culture of Montmartre with spellbinding visuals and eye-catching colors – influenced by Degas, Van Gogh, and Japanese graphic arts.
His work revolutionized the art of the poster and left an unforgettable image of turn-of-the-century Paris.
