Dance, Weave, and Sip Cider at MAKE After Hours in Normal Heights
MAKE Cafe in Normal Heights is usually a daytime place, open for breakfast and lunch and closed by mid-afternoon. MAKE After Hours changes that. It’s a new evening pop-up series pulling together musicians, artists, and culture-makers from across San Diego, and the first one is almost here.
Afrobeat Inside, Old-Time Fiddle in the Garden
Afrobeat San Diego is handling the sound with a DJ set and mini Afrodance classes running throughout the night, so you learn the steps and then have somewhere to use them. Afrobeat itself is a West African fusion of Nigerian and Ghanaian styles with American funk, jazz, and soul.
Out back, Supper Club String Band plays old-time music on fiddle, banjo, and guitar. Fair warning: if you end up two-stepping between the corn and the knee-high marigolds, that was the plan all along.
Help Install an Eva Struble Original
Artist Eva Struble is leading a site-specific installation in the MAKE garden, weaving a new piece into the fencing. Her design draws on collaborative projects with Karen Organization San Diego and United Women of East Africa.
Everyone who comes is invited to help put it up. You’ll leave having built something that stays in the garden long after you go home.
Bivouac Cider and Drinks Built Around the Farm
Bivouac Ciderworks in North Park donated cider for the night, and MAKE is pouring new farm-inspired mixed drinks alongside it. Non-alcoholic options are on the list too.
The light bites come from the MAKE kitchen, which builds its menu around San Diego ingredients and global flavors. Two drinks are covered by your ticket, so pace yourself accordingly.
Shop the Global Art Village, Fund the Training Program
The dining room becomes a Global Art Village and Marketplace for the evening, with local artists and microenterprise vendors from all over the world set up to sell and talk shop.
All proceeds go to MAKE’s Job Readiness Training Program for refugee and immigrant women. Tickets are limited, so buy early rather than deciding day-of.
