Birch Aquarium’s Living Seas Exhibition is Opening Soon
Big changes are happening under the surface at Birch Aquarium. The aquarium has unveiled Living Seas, its biggest transformation since 1992, offering an immersive, hands-on journey through the wonders of the Pacific Ocean.
If you thought you knew Birch Aquarium, get ready to see it in a whole new light.

Step Into the Ocean’s Hidden Worlds
Designed to spark curiosity at every turn, Living Seas isn’t just about looking at exhibits—it’s about stepping into them.
Crawl into the hidden world of a Giant Pacific Octopus, wander “beneath” the iconic Scripps Pier, and watch schooling fish cruise by in an expanded Open Ocean habitat featuring the aquarium’s beloved rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtle.
Other highlights include a four-times-larger Tropical Coral reef with an immersive viewing window, and mangrove roots growing right out of the walls. Digital projections, UV-reactive art, and sensory elements turn every visit into a full-body experience.

Explore the Science Behind the Scenes
Living Seas also shines a spotlight on groundbreaking research happening just down the hill at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. From coral conservation to how jellyfish are helping advance cancer research, this exhibit weaves together science and storytelling in a way that makes every discovery feel personal.
Bonus: Birch is also rolling out a new onsite café—Blue Wave Bistro—and a new evening ticket option, so you can enjoy sunset views over La Jolla’s coastline after hours.
