“Simply Breathtaking” Aaskah Odedra Performs Rising At ArtPower
One of the most exciting young contemporary dancers and choreographers in the UK, the “simply breathtaking” (Globe and Mail) Aakash Odedra takes the stage at ArtPower in the captivating solo Rising. An eclectic evening-length performance, Rising features choreography from acclaimed international artists Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Russell Maliphant, and Odedra himself.
In Rising, Odedra draws on his background in the classical Indian dance disciplines of Kathak and Bharatanatyam while remaining intrinsically contemporary in style and concept. Exploring different processes and aesthetics in the pieces created for Rising, Odedra highlights different aspects of himself to create a new personal language: lyrical and graceful, brutal and raw, edgy, and animalistic.
The four solos include
Nritta, which displays intricate rhythms to traditional Indian music
In the Shadow of Man, explores the lines that separate humans from animals
CUT, draws directly on Kathak and Bharatanatyam techniques and explores how light cuts and shapes the movement’s flow and form
Constellation, inspired by the patterns created within the stellar constellations.
Presented in partnership with the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, this December 3 concert is part of ArtPower’s dance series and takes place at the David and Dorothea Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at boxoffice.ucsd.edu or by phone at 858.534.TIXS (8497).
