Downtown Chula Vista Celebrates Día de los Muertos With Lowriders and Community Altars
Chula Vista’s Third Avenue is turning into a full-scale Día de los Muertos celebration, and it’s grown into one of those events that actually gets it right.
Now in its fifth year, the whole thing has found its rhythm – lowriders with altars in the trunks, giant alebrijes lining the street, and a community altar where you can honor someone you’ve lost. It’s the real deal, not some watered-down version.

What Makes It Worth Going
The Impalas Car Club brings their lowriders, but here’s what’s cool – they’re setting up ofrendas right in the trunks. It’s this perfect blend of car culture and tradition that somehow makes complete sense when you see it in person. You’ve got these beautiful vehicles paired with deeply personal altars, and it works.
Third Avenue gets transformed with hand-crafted alebrijes and Catrina figures made by local artists. Las Jefas runs a mercado where you can pick up actual artisan goods (not the mass-produced stuff you see everywhere), and there’s food and drinks all over the neighborhood.
The whole street comes alive in a way that feels organic.
The community altar on Davidson Street is where things get meaningful. Bring a photo or something small to remember someone special, and add it to this collective space. It’s one of those moments that reminds you why traditions like this matter.

Contests If You’re Into That
They’re running an altar contest with cash prizes, which is worth entering if you’ve put together something you’re proud of. There’s also a Catrín/Catrina ensemble contest with categories for youth, adults, and couples. If you’re planning to dress up anyway, you might as well throw your hat in the ring.

The Practical Stuff
You’ve got a solid five hours to explore without feeling rushed. It’s free, which is huge if you’re bringing the family or a group of friends. And it manages to be family-friendly while still having substance – kids get to participate in real traditions, not just face painting and balloon animals.
This is the fifth year they’ve done this, and you can tell they’ve learned what works. It’s become one of those events where you actually want to go back year after year.
