The Greatest Social Beach Volleyball Tournament Ever Returns to Del Mar
The Onesie Beach Volleyball Tournament is back for its 10th year, and if you’ve never played beach volleyball in a full-body onesie, you’re missing out on one of the more ridiculous ways to spend a Saturday morning.
It’s happening at Del Mar Dog Beach, and the whole thing benefits charity – this year they’re aiming to raise $10,000. The vibe is fun, competitive enough to be interesting, and deeply committed to the absurdity of playing sports in fuzzy pajamas.
Weighted-Draw Play in Your Coziest Outfit
You sign up for 2s, and teams are chosen based on ability at the recreational level (and maybe how cumbersome your onesie is). It’s mostly coed, and you don’t need to bring your own partner – they figure it out on the day.
The tournament runs pool play followed by single elimination, with prizes for the winning teams (usually 1st, 2nd, and 3rd) plus best onesies. Coffee, breakfast, and a light lunch are included, along with a sponsored swag bag. Register early, and you get more swag, which is always a nice perk.
The Onesie Rules Are Non-Negotiable
Your onesie has to cover knees and elbows – footies are optional, but the rule is clear: no onesie, no play. They’re keeping it classy (their words), so no banana hammocks. They also reserve the right to refuse entry or revoke registration for any reason, which sounds harsh but probably just means don’t be weird about it.
Find a fun onesie, commit to the bit, and show up ready to dive in sand while wearing fleece.
A Decade of Beach Volleyball Ridiculousness
The tournament started in 2017 and has turned into one of the more entertaining social sports events in San Diego. It’s a solid way to meet people, play some beach volleyball without taking yourself too seriously, and support a local charity while you’re at it.
Plus, Del Mar Dog Beach in January is perfect – cool enough that wearing a onesie doesn’t feel totally insane, and the morning light on the water is unbeatable.
See you there!
Beach volleyball, ridiculous onesies, and $10,000 raised for charity – this is exactly the kind of thing San Diego does well.
