ArtPower Introduces April 2023 Lineup Of Events
There are no shortage of events at ArtPower this spring and April 2023 lineup includes a few heavy hitters for UC San Diego’s performing arts program.
ArtPower April 2023 Lineup Highlights
Atamira Dance Company | April 6, Epstein Family Amphitheater
ArtPower returns to the Epstein Family Amphitheater on April 6 with the San Diego debut of New Zealand’s Atamira Dance Company. Māori culture is put on stage, front and center, in Atamira’s latest work: Te Wheke, the octopus. In this work, eight choreographers were paired with eight dancers, each duo creating a solo reflecting the eight tentacles of the graceful octopus.
The Dream House Quartet | April 26, Epstein Family Amphitheater
The Dream House Quartet, made up of pianists Katia & Marielle Labèque, and guitarist-composers Bryce Dessner and David Chalmin, will perform a program that includes the California premiere of Thom Yorke’s first classical composition, world premieres by Dessner and Chalmin, and works by Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Steve Reich, Anna Thorvaldsdottir and more. Their first stop in California is at the Epstein Family Amphitheater, on April 26.
Dirk Powell Band | April 13, The Loft
Other events in April includes Dirk Powell Band on April 13, as he brings America old-time music traditions alive at The Loft. His new group is a hard-driving, exciting testament to the power of the living old-time music tradition. Powell’s ability to unite traditional and historical forms with modern sensibilities has led to work with many of today’s greatest artists, from Sting to Jewel to Loretta Lynn to Joan Baez.
Ehud Asherie | April 18, The Loft
Jazz pianist, Ehud Asherie, makes his ArtPower debut on April 18. A mainstay of the New York City scene with admirers worldwide, Ehud Asherie brings many selves to the piano bench: the dazzling jazz improviser with an astonishing range from ragtime to the present and future; the composer of surprising melodies; the living embodiment of Brazilian piano music with a special love for Ernesto Nazareth.
Aynur Doğan | April 20, Mandeville Auditorium
One of the most well-known musicians from Turkey, Aynur Doğan, performs on April 20. A best-seller among Kurdish folk albums, Aynur vocal style are praised not just in Turkish media, but also in international media. Musically she tries to blend Kurdish with Western music, interpreting her traditional repertoire in a modern way.
