US Police & Fire Championships Return to San Diego for 59th Season
San Diego has always had a deep connection to the men and women who serve in public safety, and every June, that connection gets a full week in the spotlight.
The US Police & Fire Championships are back, bringing thousands of first responders from across the country together to compete in 40 Olympic-style sports at the San Diego Marriott Mission Valley. Now in its 59th year, this is one of those events that reminds you why San Diego is such a special place to call home.

A Week That Brings Out the Best
Few events make community feel as tangible as this one. A week-long multi-sport competition, the championships draw competitors from law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical services, customs, corrections, and more – all coming together to compete, connect, and celebrate the spirit of public service.
40 Events, One Big Week
The lineup is as expansive as it gets – 40 Olympic-style sports covering everything from baseball, soccer, and track and field to archery, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, bench press, billiards, dodgeball, indoor rowing, and tennis.
New this year: Hyrox joins the roster, adding a serious endurance challenge to an already impressive slate. There’s something for every kind of competitor.

Rooted Right Here
The championships trace back to 1967, when San Diego Police Lieutenant Veon “Duke” Nyhus founded what was then called the California Police Olympics.
His goal was straightforward – sport and fitness could sharpen the mind and body of those in public service, ease stress, and build real connection. Nearly six decades later, that idea is still the engine driving the whole thing.
Participants span a wide range of public safety roles: active and retired full-time officers and firefighters, 9-1-1 dispatchers, crime scene investigators, lifeguards, and volunteer firefighters – all competing under one roof.
Community Backing
This year, the San Diego Firefighters Federal Credit Union is covering half of the administrative registration fee for all USPFC athletes representing San Diego County fire agencies – a practical show of support for the people who show up for our city every single day.
