There are Halloween parties, and then there are Halloween nights you end up standing inside of.
The Rosin Box Project brings back Ghost Light Masquerade at The Nocturne Theatre this October, a masked run of contemporary dance, theater, and storytelling where you move through the performance instead of watching it from a seat.
Why a Single Bulb Stays Lit on an Empty Stage
The name comes from an old theater superstition. When a stage goes dark for the night, one bare bulb is left burning center stage, partly for safety and partly, as the story goes, for whoever else is still in the building.
The Rosin Box Project built the whole production around that idea. Ghost Light Masquerade has become a Halloween tradition for the company, and it is back at The Nocturne Theatre for another run.
Masks On, No Assigned Seats, Dancers Feet Away
Everyone wears a mask. There is no fixed seating, so you move freely through the space and decide how close you want to get, which in this room can mean a few feet from a dancer mid phrase.
That setup turns the audience into part of the picture. Stand still and the action finds you. Move, and you see the night from an angle the person across the room never gets.
Contemporary dance, theater, and storytelling run together here rather than taking turns, so the night reads less like a program you sit through and more like a world you walked into.
Seven Nights Inside The Nocturne Theatre
The run is short. Seven performances total, all at the same start time, at The Nocturne Theatre on Imperial Avenue.
Dress for movement, because you will be on your feet and shifting position for most of the night. Masks are part of the deal, and the room is tight enough that where you choose to stand changes what you see.
Tickets are worth locking in early. Seven nights is a short window, and spooky season in San Diego stacks up fast once October hits.
