A Rare Look at James Hubbell’s Work Comes to Escondido for One Day Only
North County art lovers, this one is worth clearing the calendar for. The Ilan Lael Foundation is presenting a never-before-seen piece by the late James Hubbell at a special one-day exhibit titled Collaborators and Friends: James Hubbell, Peter Mitten, & Wendell Perry.
Hosted at Circle Center Art Garden in Escondido, the exhibition brings together works that celebrate more than four decades of creative partnership between Hubbell and two of his closest collaborators, Peter Mitten and Wendell Perry.

Celebrating a Creative Legacy
James Hubbell’s influence on San Diego’s public art scene runs deep. Many of us have admired his work without even realizing it, including Sea Nymph along Shelter Island’s waterfront. His organic forms and thoughtful integration of art and nature have become part of the region’s visual identity.
This exhibit honors that legacy while highlighting the enduring friendships and collaborations that helped shape it.
On view will be sculptures, watercolors, and collages by Hubbell, offering a closer look at the range of his artistic expression.
The exhibition will also feature a new collaborative sculpture by Peter Mitten and Wendell Perry, created in the spirit of their longtime partnership with Hubbell.

Together, the works reflect a shared creative language developed over decades – one rooted in craftsmanship, imagination, and a deep respect for the natural world.
A Meaningful Gathering in Escondido
The setting at Circle Center Art Garden feels especially fitting. Tucked away on Upas Lane in Escondido, the space offers a serene backdrop for spending a few thoughtful hours with art that carries both local history and personal connection.
All proceeds from the exhibition will benefit the Ilan Lael Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving Hubbell’s studio, home, and artistic vision for future generations. Attending not only gives us access to rare and meaningful work, it also supports the continuation of his legacy here in San Diego County.

See you there!
If Hubbell’s work has ever stopped us in our tracks, this is a special chance to experience it up close and celebrate the creative community he helped shape.
