Country music and a golf course are not an obvious pairing, and that is exactly why this one lands. The Loma Club is handing its grounds over to Country Fest, a free evening of live music, barbecue, and chain stitching in Point Loma.
Thunderbird Mountain Band on a Golf Course
Thunderbird Mountain Band is on live music duty, playing the kind of country that sounds better outdoors than it ever does inside four walls. A golf course turns into a pretty generous listening room once the light starts to go.
The window runs four hours, which is enough to catch a full set and still make late dinner plans after. Or to skip the dinner plans entirely and stay put.
BBQ, Drink Specials, and Zero Cover
There is no cover charge, which is rarer than it should be for a night with a live band attached to it. The only money you spend is on what you eat and drink.
BBQ and drink specials are running through the evening, so come hungry and pace yourself. Four hours is a long time to hold a plate.
Chain Stitching You Can Watch Happen
Live western chain stitching is set up on site, and it is the detail that separates this from every other outdoor concert on the calendar. Chain stitching is the old embroidery technique behind the lettering on vintage western wear, worked on a hand-cranked machine one loop at a time.
Watching someone run that machine is half the draw. Stand over it for a few minutes and you will understand why the craft never really went away.
An Open-Sky Saturday Night in Liberty Station
Liberty Station has plenty of places to spend a Saturday night, but very few of them come with this much open sky. The Loma Club leans on its course for the setting, and the setting does most of the work.
It is casual by design. No dress code to decode, no ticket to print, no reason to overthink any part of it.
