“John Lennon killed the barber business,” says Lee Brown, owner of Mister Brown’s Barber shop in North Park. “During the Vietnam War and rise of the hippy movement, Lennon grew his hair out, the masses followed and barber shops became less and less popular.”
But recently, the barber business has been making an incredible comeback! Thanks to the popularity of the “dapper” lifestyle, more and more men are choosing to spend their grooming budget in places like Mister Brown’s.
And that’s good for our city.
We had the chance to sit down with Lee in his shop and hear the story of how he came to open this incredible San Diego business.
When he opened in December 2014, the shop was doing 1-2 haircuts per day. In just the three short years that they’ve been open, they’re now pushing 90-100 haircuts per day.
Lee, who’s from New York, says that he had a lot of inspiration to open the shop. Places like Fellow Barber and Blind Barber got his creative juices flowing.
When we asked him what makes his shop different from others, his answer was simple and to the point:
“Customer service is our number one.”
Customer service is first and foremost, but that is’t the only thing that sets Mister Brown’s apart from the rest. Lee and his wife Laura treat their barbers like family, saying, “They do what I can’t do. They’re the artists.”
The other component that has customers raving is the urban design; “We put a lot of thought into the design and the fabric. We did’t rush,” said Lee.
And it’s apparent! The second you walk into the shop you can see the time devoted to every detail of the decor. From the fixtures, to the sexy exposed-brick walls and the gorgeous wood floors. Everything is more than you’d expect it to be.
Summed up, we’ll call it manly-hipster-chic. The kick-ass industrial design sets the perfect tone for anyone enjoying a cut and a hot shave. While waiting, patrons can kick back with a game of pool or relax with a beer and watch TV in the lounge area.
The open space and lounge also make Mister Brown’s the perfect place for a bachelor party to get ready for the big day.
“With the shop doing great, what’s next for Mister Brown’s?” we asked.
“As we move forward, we’re moving towards a lifestyle brand,” said Lee.
The Browns are currently developing a product line with everything from shampoo and moisturizing creams, to shave creams and much more. The ultimate goal is to get the Mister Brown brand into other shops and department stores. After that, they want to open another shop.
Getting a cut and a shave doesn’t have to be another chore to check off the to-do list. A trip to the barber shop used to be a special time for men who cared. If that sounds like you, then there’s no better place to do it than our local Mister Brown’s Barber shop!
