The Oldest Children’s Kite Festival in the US is Right Here in Ocean Beach
The Ocean Beach Kite Festival has been a San Diego tradition since 1948, making this year’s edition the 79th annual – and one of those rare free community events that delivers for everyone who shows up.
No tickets, no registration, just show up at Robb Field and let the kites do their thing.

A Day Out for the Whole Family
The festival is put on by the OB Kiwanis and OB Women’s Club and runs all morning into the afternoon at Robb Field on Bacon Street.
The lineup of activities covers plenty of ground – kite building, flying demos, games, crafts, and food. Kids can build their own kite on-site, watch the demos, and get it in the air themselves.
It’s the kind of event where the adults end up having just as much fun as the little ones.

Why It’s Worth the Trip to OB
Ocean Beach has its own energy on a good Saturday, and the kite festival only adds to it. Robb Field sits right in the heart of the neighborhood, and with the sky full of color and the whole community out together, it’s one of those afternoons that feels distinctly San Diego.
The fact that it’s been running continuously since 1948 – making it the oldest children’s kite festival in the country – says everything about how much the community values it.

See you there!
Free, family-friendly, and nearly eight decades in the making – this one is hard to pass up.
