Point Loma Lights Up Its New Gateway Sign With Community Celebration
If you’ve driven into Point Loma recently, you’ve probably noticed something new welcoming you in. The Point Loma Association is officially celebrating the completion of the new Gateway Sign with a Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony – and it’s a big moment for the neighborhood.
After years of planning, collaboration, and community support, the illuminated landmark is now standing tall as a fresh symbol of Point Loma pride.
A Community Milestone Years in the Making
The Gateway Sign didn’t happen overnight. Design development spanned several years, followed by an 18-month to two-year formal design phase. After final approvals were granted in mid-September 2025, construction and installation were completed within just a few months.
The finished sign stands approximately 29 feet tall and 22 feet wide, supported by an 8.5-foot-deep foundation. Funded entirely through private community donations, it reflects the kind of volunteer-driven placemaking that Point Loma has long been known for.
Since its installation, the response from residents and local businesses has been overwhelmingly positive, with many already embracing it as a new neighborhood landmark.

Ribbon Cutting, Remarks, and a Toast
The one-hour celebration will include welcome remarks, a brief presentation on the history and development of the sign, and the premiere of an official project video. The ribbon cutting will take place in front of a 20-inch replica of the sign, followed by a champagne toast to mark the occasion.
Approximately 100 community leaders and members are expected to attend, including San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, underscoring the significance of the project for the broader community.
Powered by Local Partners
The project came together thanks to a team of San Diego-based partners, including Schmidt Design Group, Graphic Solutions, Rick Engineering, YJ Engineering, Randall Lamb, Integrated Signs, and Hazard Construction.
Leadership and oversight were provided by the all-volunteer Point Loma Association Board, continuing the nonprofit’s long-standing commitment to keeping the peninsula beautiful. Founded in 1961, the Point Loma Association remains 100 percent volunteer-led.
Free self-parking will be available onsite, with additional street parking nearby.
