H1 Hydroplanes Return to Mission Bay for the Ultimate Speed Showdown

The roar is back at Mission Bay this weekend as San Diego Bayfair powered by Samson Rope brings three days of the fastest racing on water.

When boats hit speeds topping 200 mph and less than 800 points separate the top five championship contenders, we’re looking at one of those weekends where every lap could reshape the entire season.

Why Mission Bay Is Perfect For This

There’s a reason hydroplane racing keeps coming back here—Mission Bay was literally dredged and designed as a hydroplane racecourse. The setup gives fans incredible shoreline views of boats that look more like missiles skimming across the water than anything that should logically float.

This venue has produced some legendary moments, including Dave Villwock’s lap record of 173.384 mph set in 1999, a mark that still stands today.

The course offers one of the fastest setups in the world, which means we’re not just watching racing—we’re watching drivers push the absolute limits of what’s physically possible on water.

The Championship Battle

This isn’t just another race weekend. With the points standings this tight, San Diego Bayfair could decide the entire championship. Andrew Tate leads in the U-91 Miss Goodman Real Estate, but defending Bill Muncey Cup champion Corey Peabody is hunting for his third straight San Diego win.

Add in three-time Bayfair winner J. Michael Kelly, legendary Dave Villwock, and Jamie Nilsen, and we’ve got a field where any of five drivers could realistically walk away with both the weekend win and serious championship momentum.

The pressure is real—one mistake, one mechanical issue, or one perfect lap could change everything.

Beyond the Racing

While the boats are obviously the main attraction, Bayfair delivers that festival atmosphere that makes spending a weekend at Mission Bay feel like a proper event.

Live entertainment, food vendors, and family-friendly activities fill the gaps between racing sessions, though honestly, watching 200-mph boats might be all the entertainment most of us need.

See you there!

Some sports are better experienced in person, especially when they involve speeds that don’t seem humanly possible. Mission Bay is about to get very loud.
