Kick Off Opera Season With Verdi’s Rigoletto at the Civic Theatre
A jester’s joke goes too far, a curse is spoken, and nothing is the same after that. San Diego Opera is kicking off its 2026/2027 season with Verdi’s Rigoletto at the San Diego Civic Theatre, and it’s a fitting way to spend a spooky-season night out.
With world-class and local talent, grand sets, and elaborate costumes, this is a story of betrayal, revenge, and a father’s fierce love that will hold you spellbound.

A Jester, a Duke, and a Dangerous Curse
Making jokes is what Rigoletto does for a living, serving as court jester to the predatory Duke of Mantua. But the joke may be on him when one of his jests enrages Count Monterone, the father of the Duke’s latest victim.
The curse that follows has dangerous consequences for Rigoletto and his beautiful daughter, Gilda. As the story unfolds, Rigoletto’s fierce need to protect Gilda sets off a chain of betrayal and revenge you won’t be able to look away from.

Melodies You Already Know
Even if you’re new to opera, you’ll recognize the music. “La donna è mobile” is one of opera’s catchiest tunes, and “Caro nome” and the stunning quartet “Bella figlia dell’amore” are just as memorable.
Verdi knew he had a hit with “La donna è mobile.” He reportedly kept it from his tenor until the final rehearsals and made him promise not to hum it in the hallway.
The Talent Bringing Verdi to Life
Michael Chioldi stars as Rigoletto, with Madison Leonard as Gilda and José Simerilla Romero as the Duke. Peixin Chen, Guadalupe Paz, and Joel Balzun round out the principal cast as Sparafucile, Maddalena, and Count Monterone.
Yves Abel conducts, Christopher Mattaliano directs, and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra performs. It’s sung in Italian, with English and Spanish translations projected above the stage, so you can follow every twist.
Make a Night of it
Come early for a free pre-performance talk to learn what to listen for, and stick around after select performances for a Q&A with cast members and San Diego Opera staff.
If you’re going on opening night, there’s also a party with the artists afterward, with tickets sold separately. It’s a great way to go deeper into the music and meet fellow opera lovers along the way.
See you there!
A gripping story, unforgettable melodies, and a stage full of talent make Rigoletto a great fall date night, or a perfect first opera.
