Shark Snorkels Return to Birch Aquarium

If snorkeling alongside sharks has been on the list, Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is making it happen this September.

After a seven-year break, the popular Shark Snorkel program is back – and it’s one of the more memorable ways to explore what’s living just off La Jolla’s shores.

Into the Water With La Jolla’s Locals

This two-hour guided snorkeling experience, led by Birch Aquarium educators, takes us into the shallow waters of La Jolla for an up-close look at Leopard Sharks – one of the most common shark species along the California coast.

Known for their distinctive saddle-like markings, these gentle sharks gather in San Diego’s warm waters every summer as pregnant females incubate their young. Along the way, we’ll learn about shark biology, conservation, and responsible snorkeling while observing them in their natural habitat.

Before We Go

Intermediate swimming ability is required, and previous snorkeling experience is recommended. We bring our own gear – masks, fins, and snorkel.

And while the open water can feel a little intimidating, Birch Aquarium’s guides make the whole experience approachable from the moment we hit the water.

The program is open to ages ten and up, with minors required to be accompanied by a paid adult. Tickets are $35 for aquarium members and $40 for the general public.
