Celebrate Jackie’s Legacy at Wings Over Big Bear
Following the loss of Jackie, the bald eagle whose Big Bear nest captivated millions of viewers worldwide, the Big Bear community is coming together to honor her memory.
Wings Over Big Bear is a weekend built around that very purpose, bringing remembrance, wildlife education, and conservation together in one shared celebration of her legacy.
Saturday’s Tribute to Jackie
The weekend begins with a free, public commemoration at Bear Mountain Resort, opened by the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation and featuring music and remarks from community, wildlife, conservation, government, and tourism representatives.
Mountaintop Strings performs as the venue opens, with food and beverage service from Bear Mountain Resort available throughout.
After the ceremony, visitors can explore community and wildlife booths from organizations like Friends of Big Bear Valley, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, and the U.S. Forest Service, all working across the Valley in wildlife education and conservation.
From Remembrance to Action
The following day shifts from remembrance to action with Wildlife Education Day, offering a range of activities spread throughout Big Bear Valley rather than one centralized program.
Planned offerings include guided birdwatching, a Grey’s Peak hike exploring eagle habitat, native seed collecting, raptor viewing at Butler Peak, a Youth Eagle Ambassador Program, and a community remembrance activity called Postcards for Jackie.
Some activities have limited capacity or require advance registration, so it’s worth checking the official event page for the latest schedule before heading out.
See you there!
Between the commemoration, the hands-on wildlife education, and a community coming together around a shared sense of stewardship, Wings Over Big Bear is a meaningful way to honor Jackie’s legacy.
