The Ilan-Lael Spring Tours are back, offering an immersive experience into James Hubbell’s artistic world. Visitors can explore the renowned artist’s one-of-a-kind home and studio, set against the breathtaking Santa Ysabel landscape.

New This Year: Saturday Socials

This season, Ilan-Lael is introducing Saturday Socials, an elevated tour experience featuring exclusive food, drinks, and intimate discussions with guest speakers.

After the 90-minute docent-led tour, visitors can linger in some of the most scenic spots on the property—like the Art Center, Boy’s House patio, Pollinator Garden, or Poolside—while engaging with local artists, architects, and historians.

The Saturday Socials lecture series will feature special guests, including Keith York of Modern San Diego, who will explore Hubbell’s connection to architect Sim Bruce Richard, and Drew Hubbell, AIA, who will discuss sustainable architecture and his experience growing up in an artistic household.

📅 May 10: Danielle Deery from Oceanside Museum of Art will present on the Museum’s long-time support of James Hubbell during some of his most pivotal career moments.

📅 May 17: Drew Hubbell AIA. from Hubbell and Hubbell Architects, son of James and Anne, will give a lecture on green building, architecture and growing up at Ilan-Lael.

📅 May 31: Volcan Mountain Foundation which Anne Hubbell was a founding board member of, will share the importance of land conservation and stewardship.

📅 June 7: Dave Hampton historian and author of San Diego’s Craft Revolution: From Post-War Modern to California Design will present on James Hubbell’s early years in the San Diego art community.

📅 June 14: Sarah Liliva Brightwood President of Rancho La Puerta will present on their wellness mission and long-standing relationship with James Hubbell. Preview of 2025 Ilan-Lael led Walking Tour of Hubbell Art in Tecate.

A Legacy of Art & Nature

James Hubbell’s deep connection to nature and his belief in the transformative power of art shaped his life’s work, from architectural masterpieces to community projects like Pacific Rim Park and schools in Tijuana, Mexico.

From May 2 to June 14, 2025, tours will be available every Monday, Friday, and Saturday at 10 AM and 1 PM, giving guests a chance to discover the seamless fusion of art, architecture, and nature that defined Hubbell’s work.
