Ilan-Lael Foundation’s Expanded Tours Open James Hubbell’s World to Us

The Ilan-Lael Foundation just made it way easier to experience James Hubbell’s incredible compound near Julian. They’ve expanded their docent-led tours through the end of the year, which is huge considering these tours used to only happen during limited seasonal windows.

A Living Work of Art in the Oak Woodlands

Ilan-Lael sits on 10 acres of oak woodlands, and everything about this place feels like stepping into Hubbell’s imagination. We’re talking hand-crafted living spaces, studios, galleries, and gardens that were all built in harmony with the natural landscape.

While you can see Hubbell’s work scattered throughout Southern California and Baja, this compound is where his vision comes together as one complete experience.

Executive Director Marianne Gerdes puts it perfectly: “James believed art should live in harmony with nature, and Ilan-Lael is where that belief comes to life.” It’s not just about viewing art—it’s about understanding how someone can live completely integrated with their creative practice and the environment around them.

What the Tour Experience Offers

These 90-minute tours take small groups through the gardens, sculptures, and architectural landmarks that make Ilan-Lael so unique. The intimate group size means you get real insight into Hubbell’s creative process, not just a quick walkthrough.

There’s something special about seeing how an artist’s workspace evolves organically with their surroundings over decades.

The tour wraps up at the on-site gallery and gift shop, where you can browse Hubbell art, books, and artisan goods. It’s the kind of place where you’ll probably end up buying something just to take a piece of that creative energy home with you.

Planning Your Visit

Tours are $90 per person and you can book up to two months in advance, which is definitely recommended since these are small group experiences. The fact that they’re now running three days a week through the end of the year means we actually have a decent shot at getting reservations without having to plan a year ahead.

Just keep in mind that availability might shift due to private events, so booking in advance through their website is pretty much essential.

A Rare Creative Sanctuary

There really isn’t anything else like Ilan-Lael. In a world where so much art feels disconnected from its environment, Hubbell created this place where creativity, nature, and daily life blend seamlessly together.

Now that it’s more accessible, we finally have the chance to experience what that kind of integrated artistic vision actually looks like.
