MAKE Cafe Opens in Normal Heights

San Diego has a new neighborhood cafe worth knowing about – and the story behind it makes every cup of coffee mean a little more. MAKE Projects has been doing quiet, steady work since 2017, providing job training and farm-to-table dining experiences for refugee and immigrant women across the city.

MAKE Cafe San Diego

A Mission With a Menu

Since launching, nearly 400 women from more than 30 countries have come through their workforce development programs. The new 5,000-square-foot cafe and garden in Normal Heights is both a public restaurant and hands-on training environment where participants build real-world skills in agriculture, hospitality, and food preparation.

Every meal served here directly supports that mission – connecting the community around great food while creating pathways to long-term employment for refugee and immigrant women.

Fresh Leadership in the Kitchen

Executive Chef Ashley McBrady brings a culinary background spanning Portland, Denver, and San Diego – including stints at You & Yours Distilling Co., Cellar Hand, and Denver’s pioneering Potager. Her ingredient-driven approach is a natural fit for a space rooted in local farming and community connection.

Expect a globally inspired daytime menu with seasonal dishes, fresh produce, and flavors reflecting the diverse communities that call San Diego home.

Free, Fun, and Open to All

The grand opening is free and open to everyone. Cold Cuts Vinyl Deli will be on the decks, with complimentary bites and sips, family-friendly garden activities, and a farmstand to browse. The first 50 people through the door also take home a MAKE Projects tote bag.

See you there!

Head to Normal Heights this Sunday and raise a cup to the women who made MAKE Cafe happen.
