Pacific Beach Gets Serious About Ocean Safety With New Fundraising Campaign

We love Pacific Beach for its endless summer vibes and perfect waves, but let’s be real—the ocean demands respect. That’s why we’re excited to see Ocean Park Inn and the Pacific Beach Town Council teaming up for their third annual fundraiser, this time with a mission that hits close to home: keeping everyone safe in the water.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

If you’ve spent any time at PB, you know how packed the beach gets, especially during summer. Tourists from all over the world flock here, and while we love the energy they bring, many aren’t familiar with our ocean’s quirks.

Rip currents are no joke—they’re responsible for over 80% of surf beach rescues nationwide and cause more than 100 deaths annually in the U.S. Those stats make this fundraiser feel pretty essential.

The goal is straightforward: raise $20,000 to install new and upgraded rip current warning signs in strategic spots along the beach. These aren’t just any signs—they’re specifically requested by our local lifeguards, designed with clear warnings, simple graphics, and multilingual messaging to reach as many people as possible.

How It Works

The campaign kicks off on World Oceans Day and runs through July 4, giving everyone plenty of time to contribute.

Here’s the best part: Ocean Park Inn is matching every single donation dollar-for-dollar throughout the entire campaign. So when you donate $25, it becomes $50. When someone chips in $100, it turns into $200. That kind of commitment shows they’re serious about making a difference.

Last year’s campaign raised about $14,000, which went directly toward Pacific Beach improvements. This year’s $20,000 target reflects the growing need for better safety measures as our beach continues to attract more visitors.

Beyond the Signs

This fundraiser represents something bigger than just new signage. It’s part of an ongoing partnership between Ocean Park Inn and the Pacific Beach Town Council that includes beach cleanups, sustainability events, and community activations throughout the year.

They’re building something lasting here—a culture of stewardship and safety that benefits everyone who calls PB home or visits regularly.

The campaign will wrap up with a community celebration in September, where they’ll present a ceremonial check to the City of San Diego Lifeguard Division. It’s a nice way to honor the people who keep us safe out there every day.
