Pâtisserie Mélanie North Park Now Open For Breakfast & Lunch

The opening of Pâtisserie Mélanie North Park location is the realization of a dream over ten years in the making. Chef/Owner Melanie Dunn earned her Diplôme de Pâtisserie from Le Cordon Paris, then opened her first San Diego location to rave reviews in February 2018.

Two years later, she signed a lease to open her second location in North Park. After a temporary closure due to the pandemic and a challenging build out of the new location, Melanie finally and quietly opened the doors to her bakery and café on the corner of 30th and Gunnin late April 2023.

She launched her passion project with a select offering of viennoiseries and a coffee program and in recent weeks has unveiled pastries. Lunch was introduced in late May. Happy hour and dinner service will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Pâtisserie Mélanie North Park offers an immersive French experience

For the North Park location, Melanie has envisioned an immersive French experience. She was very involved in the design process, working with award-winning architect Tony Garcia of Asquared Studios to create a minimalist design like one would find in Paris’s upscale patisseries and cafes.

At Pâtisserie Mélanie, the day begins as the Parisians would, with a variety of coffees, French teas and viennoiseries. All the doughs for Melanie’s famous croissants and kouign-amanns are made by hand, using traditional methods. They take three days to make from start to finish, and unlike even most French bakeries, the pastries are never frozen.

Around mid-morning, the food starts. Melanie has designed a menu, executed beautifully by the newest member of the team, Chef Anthony Bruno. An alum of both French Laundry and Café Chloe, Chef Bruno brings a wealth of experience in fine French cuisine to Pâtisserie Mélanie. The menu includes croques, quiches and tartines. All the breads, from the brioche for the croques to the Danish rugbrød for the tartines, are made in house.

The drinks are also something special at Pâtisserie Mélanie. The French-style coffees use beans from Café Moto, offering unique flavors like Madeleine, Chocolate Éclair and Macaron. Teas imported from famed tea houses, Fauchon and Mariage Frères, are offered by the cup or pot. And to accompany the food and pastries, guests will enjoy a curated selection of French wines, Belgian beers and Breton cider.

The beers include some of Melanie’s favorites, and the wines range from familiar French varietals to lesser-known ones. Melanie is eager to introduce people to aspects of the country’s cuisine they may not know.

But of course, she’s most enthusiastic about pastries. Already well-known for her viennoiseries, Melanie is excited to bring to San Diego some of her favorite French pastries: choux pastries like chouquettes, Saint-Honoré and Paris-Brest; meringues like macarons and dacquoise; petit-fours like bouchons, cannelés, financiers and sablés; puff pastries like flan pâtissier, mille-feuille and tarte tatin; as well as chocolate, lemon and seasonal tarts.

Dinner and Happy Hour Soon to Open

Melanie is excited to invite guests to return again and again as the eatery continues to evolve and build out programs throughout the summer. The soon to launch happy hour will feature charcuterie, cheeses, and savory petit fours to accompany the carefully chosen beer and wine list.

Future plans call for dinner service, allowing guests to experience Melanie’s creations from morning until night. The space will also be available for private events and pastry classes, evolving to become an all-day eatery.
