Salt & Straw Opening Second San Diego Location At One Paseo

It was only a few months ago – before Salt & Straw opened their first San Diego location in Little Italy – that we had barely even heard of this ice cream. Now we’ve already been too many times to count…it probably qualifies as an addiction!

And it’s only going to get worse, as Salt & Straw is set to open its second scoop shop in San Diego within Del Mar’s One Paseo mixed-use development in 2019. That’s even closer to our office!

What makes it so good?

Each of head ice cream maker Tyler Malek’s inspired flavors is handmade in small batches using the best local, organic and sustainable ingredients, including artisanal products from local partners and cream from Scott Brothers Dairy, a family-owned Southern California farm.

In addition to the core line-up of signature flavors, special offerings rotate monthly, showcasing Tyler’s passion for working with local produce and ingredients that tell a story about the area’s distinct cultural landscape.

You’ll find a Peanut Butter Stout with Chocolate Chicharrón featuring Belching Beaver Brewery’s Peanut Butter Milk Stout, and a coffee ice cream made in collaboration with James Coffee.

Founded in 2011 by cousins Kim and Tyler Malek in Portland, Ore., Salt & Straw has become a West Coast favorite with scoop shops in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, in addition to its soft-serve dessert bar, Wiz Bang Bar, in Portland.

The new scoop shop features custom design details that recall a modern-day mercantile, providing a welcoming setting to gather for hand-crafted scoops. The community focus is echoed in the company’s dedication to supporting local schools, and raising awareness for issues such as childhood hunger and equal rights. With the opening, Salt & Straw expands this ongoing commitment to its new Carmel Valley neighborhood.
