SeaWorld San Diego Set to Open One of the West Coast’s Most Immersive Shark Exhibits

If you’ve ever wanted to stand inside a glass tunnel while sharks glide overhead, your moment is coming. SeaWorld San Diego’s completely reimagined Shark Encounter is almost here.

What’s New

This isn’t a cosmetic refresh – the whole experience has been rebuilt from the ground up. The journey moves from a breezy coastal scene at the surface down into the deep ocean, and the transition is genuinely striking.

An overhead video ceiling in the entry hallway sets the tone, with sharks swimming above you as you move toward the main attraction. The shark tunnel uses a moving walkway to carry you through a transparent passage beneath the habitat, with a full 180-degree view of sharks in motion around you.

The exhibit closes with a multi-screen installation featuring rare live footage from around the world – an eight-minute presentation that lands a lot harder after you’ve just walked through the tunnel.

11 Species, Including Some Endangered Ones

On display are 11 species, including sand tiger sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and the endangered Australian leopard shark. Nearly all are classified as vulnerable, near threatened, or worse, and the conservation context is woven throughout the experience in a way that actually sticks.

The VIP Shark Tour

An exclusive elevated walkway above the habitat gives you a bird’s-eye view of the sharks while SeaWorld’s zoological team feeds and cares for them up close. It’s a rare behind-the-scenes perspective – pricing details are coming soon, so keep an eye on the SeaWorld site.

Plan Ahead and Save

Advance purchase tickets start at $65.99, available through May 10 and valid through August 31. Annual Pass Members get early access before the public opening, plus free parking and admission to summer events like Viva La Música and Summer Spectacular.

Whether you’re drawn to the science, the spectacle, or just a genuinely fun San Diego afternoon, Shark Encounter is one to put on the calendar this summer.
