16 Things to Do in San Diego When it Rains

It’s that time again… the rare occasion when you have to figure out things to do in San Diego when it rains.

We’ll spare you the clichés (“No one here can drive in the rain!” “Oh, we could really use this…” etc.) and just get down to brass tacks.

Whatever is one to do when this weather anomaly encroaches on our sunny territory?! Grab a hot toddy, give the car in the next lane a little extra room, and pick your plan.

Here are 16 things to do in San Diego when it rains.

Dinner and a Movie

Dinner and a movie is a classic for a reason, and a rainy night is the best excuse to do the upgraded version.

Hop on over to The Lot at Liberty Station or Cinepolis Del Mar for dinner and a movie in one of their luxury theaters. If you haven’t watched a movie in a recliner while someone serves you a cocktail, you’re missing out!

Bonus at The Lot: you’re already at Liberty Station, so the rest of your rainy day is a short walk away (more below).

Listen to Live Music

San Diego’s small rooms are where the best shows happen, from the Casbah on Kettner to the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach to The Music Box in Little Italy.

Our weekly list of the top concerts in San Diego has this week’s lineup. Round up your crew and pick a show.

Warm Up With a Spot of Tea

Even if you’re not a regular tea drinker, a pot of tea and a tiered tray of scones on a rainy afternoon makes a strong case.

Two spots in town do afternoon tea the proper way: The Britannia Tearooms and Marlene’s Tea and Cakes.

Shakespeare’s Corner Shoppe offers up the most authentically British afternoon tea in town, while Marlene’s offers a classic “high tea-esque” experience with a variety of house-made pastries and classic savory tea snacks.

Both take reservations, so book before you go.

For something more modern, Black Mizu Café inside Cloak & Petal in Little Italy pours cherry blossom matcha and white miso caramel lattes alongside breakfast bao.

Challenge Your Friends to Classic Video Games (Loser Buys Drinks!)

San Diego has some really fun arcades that are designed for us ‘big kids,’ which means you’ll have full bar service, great bar food, and sports on the TVs while you play!

Head to the The Smoking Gun or Coin-Op (North Park or the Gaslamp) for some classic Pac-Man or pinball duels. Crown a champion, and the loser buys the next round.

Commit to Cozy and Hunker Down in a Cabin

If you have the opportunity, why not create some snug ambiance for you and yours and rent a little getaway space for a couple of days while it rains and pours?

Idyllwild is our favorite, and our guide to a perfect Idyllwild getaway has everything you need to plan it. At around 5,400 feet, there’s a good chance the rain in San Diego is falling as snow up there.

Julian and Big Bear make great cabin towns too, and Mammoth works if you have a long weekend to spare.

They are all great, and you’ll feel like you’re in a different world for a while.

Make It a Spa Day

Rainy days are the perfect permission slip to practice just a tiny bit more self-care than usual.

Book a facial at Skin Habit in North Park or Pacific Beach and let the rain do its thing outside.

Or sweat it out at Breathe Degrees in Liberty Station, with a stadium-seating sauna, a hot plunge, and what it bills as the world’s largest indoor cold plunge. It opens at 6 AM on weekdays.

Visit a Brewery and Commit

San Diego built its reputation on beer, and a rainy afternoon is the perfect excuse to post up in a tasting room.

Plenty of breweries run trivia nights and other weekly events, so check Societe Brewing’s calendar before you go.

Trivia & Beer Night At Societe Brewing

Or head to Societe’s satellite tasting room in the Old Town Corral, an easy stop if you’re already near Old Town – this place is so cool!

Either way, pick a spot, grab a table, and let the rain set the pace.

Grab a Bowl of Something Seriously Comforting: Ramen

Nobody wants to make soup from scratch on a rainy day. Let someone else handle it, and make it ramen.

Rakiraki on Convoy is our go-to for ramen and tsukemen, with sushi and curry on the menu for anyone not in a noodle mood. It’s open daily until 1 AM. San Diego’s ramen scene keeps getting deeper, so treat this as a starting point.

Catch a Play

Cygnet Theatre moved into The Joan at Liberty Station in September 2025, and the company has never had a better home.

The former Naval Building 178 now holds two stages: The Clayes, a proscenium theater with just over 280 seats for the bigger productions, and The Dottie, a 150-seat studio where you’re close enough to see every expression.

Cygnet runs a full season of musicals and plays. There are two bars in the building for a drink before curtain, which beats waiting in the rain.

Grab tickets online or call the box office at 619-337-1525 (Wednesday to Saturday, 12 PM to 5 PM). Then make it a full Liberty Station night, with dinner at the market first.

Old Indoor Reliable: Birch Aquarium

A gray day and an aquarium just go together. Birch Aquarium in La Jolla is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, kids in tow or not, and booking online saves a few dollars a ticket.

Peruse Something Fun, and Maybe Even Buy It

Few rainy-day activities beat sifting through vintage finds with nowhere to be.

Maybe this isn’t your bag, but shopping for vintage treasures is, at the very least, a conversation piece. Whether you’re commenting to your significant other about some seriously laughable album art or sternly haggling over the price of a new dinette set, anyone can get in on the pre-owned glory.

Some notable favorites include Folk Arts Rare Records, Verbatim Books, and Midcentury.

For new books, Library Shop Mission Hills sits inside the old Mission Hills library branch and stocks local authors and San Diego titles, with sales helping fund the San Diego Public Library.

Hit a Museum

A rainy day is a perfect opportunity to take a leisurely, educational stroll through one of San Diego’s fantastic museums.

Whether it’s exploring the inner workings of the Midway or taking in one (or several!) of Balboa Park’s many museums, you can’t go wrong.

If you think you’ve seen them all, the San Diego Museum Council’s directory of San Diego museums lists dozens more. Pick one you’ve never been to.

If it’s February, it’s San Diego Museum Month: pick up a free pass at a local library (or download the digital one) and get half off general admission for up to four people at more than 70 museums, gardens, and historic sites.

Wander Around the Market, Beer in Hand

We LOVE Liberty Public Market, and it’s quite possibly the perfect place in San Diego to spend a rainy day. Grab a beer at Bottlecraft and wander the aisles of incredible food and products from local merchants.

Take your time… it’s still raining outside.

Go Climb a Rock

San Diego has some great indoor rock-climbing facilities.

Mesa Rim is a standout, with multiple beautiful facilities in San Diego that have a variety of options to keep everyone having fun while getting a great workout.

You don’t need any experience. Beginners can learn the basics, and regulars will still find routes that push them.

Release Your Inner Formula One Driver

Everyone has a friend who swears they’re the best driver in town, or claims they’ve never raced and then laps you.

Grab them and head to K1 Speed – with indoor electric karts in San Diego, Carlsbad, and Chula Vista – and finally determine who is ACTUALLY the best driver!

Do an East Coast-Style ‘Hunker Down’

When a Nor’easter rolls into Boston or New York, it can only mean one thing: a day of ‘hunkering’ down at the bar!

San Diego can play that game too. Pick one of the San Diego hole-in-the-wall bars on our list, grab some friends, and plan on getting nothing done.

See you there!

Rain or shine, San Diego has plenty going on. A little rain just changes the plan.

Get out there and enjoy your rainy days!

See you there, San Diego!
