10 of the Best Coffee Shops in San Diego Where You Can Actually Get Work Done

Hey there, San Diego! It’s time to celebrate our favorite legal stimulant because National Coffee Day is just around the corner on September 29.

So we’ve put together a list of 10 of the best work-friendly coffee shops.

Whether you’re a remote worker, catching up on office work, writing America’s next great novel, or just trying to escape your noisy roommates, these caffeine havens will supercharge your workflow.

Better Buzz

Our favorite is Better Buzz Coffee. They have locations all around San Diego, including La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Point Loma, San Marcos, Fashion Valley, Hillcrest, Coronado, and Rancho Peñasquitos.

Some locations, like San Marcos and Fashion Valley, are more grab-and-go. But most of their locations are perfect for getting some serious work done, with great atmospheres, WiFi, mellow mood music, and ridiculously strong coffee.

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters

Find Bird Rock Coffee Roasters all around the city, including Little Italy, La Jolla, Encinitas, and Morena Blvd. It has an awesome atmosphere and is a previous winner of Roast Magazine’s Micro Coffee Roaster of the Year.

They only buy seasonal coffee and roast five days a week to ensure that their coffee is always at peak freshness!

Their spacious setups make it easy to bring your laptop and settle in for hours of productivity.

Cafe Bassam

Cafe Bassam in Bankers Hill is a quirky vintage spot perfect for late-night work sessions—it stays open until midnight!

Owner Bassam Shamma claims it is the “first coffee house in San Diego,” saying, “Of course, other places had coffee. But not serious. Not the urban, social-gathering place where cultural things happen.”

With antique decor, plenty of seating, and amazing coffee, it’s a charming hideaway for getting things done.

James Coffee Co.

James Coffee Co. has five locations around San Diego: Escondido, Bankers Hill, North Park, Sabre Springs, and Vista. They all have outdoor seating. Escondido doubles as a bakery serving up breakfast, brunch, and heavenly pastries.

They all have WiFi and are a great place to get comfy and be productive.

The Living Room

The Living Room—in La Jolla, Rancho San Diego, and San Diego State—has a cozy European café vibe with Californian flair, ideal for enjoying a relaxed atmosphere while getting some work done.

All three locations have WiFi and ample indoor-outdoor seating. Rancho San Diego also offers a full Italian dinner menu with wood-fired pizzas and homemade gelato!

Vinaka Cafe

Vinaka Cafe is a cozy coffee shop in the Carlsbad Village that not only has awesome java but showcases local art. If you need an extra sugar boost on top of your caffeine buzz to keep you going, they also offer ice cream blended drinks, amazing pastries, and other tasty menu items.

Pannikin Coffee and Tea

You can find Pannikin Coffee and Tea in Leucadia and Oceanside. Their Leucadia location has a rustic, beachy atmosphere, while Oceanside has a fresh, vibrant energy—both great to mix work with a bit of relaxation.

Whether you need to buckle down or take it slow, Pannikin serves up some of the best brews around.

Lofty Coffee Co.

With two Encinitas locations, two more in Carlsbad, one in Solana Beach, and one in Little Italy, Lofty Coffee Co. pride themselves on organic and sustainable coffee.

The chilled environment makes working feel a little less like work.

Lestat’s

Lestat’s coffee house has three locations, one on Adams, one on Park, and the other in Hillcrest. Adams and Park are open 24/7, while Hillcrest is open until midnight—making it the ultimate spot for pulling an all-nighter when deadlines loom.

The Park Avenue location has extra comfortable seating, including couches and a quiet back room perfect for focused work.

Dark Horse Coffee Roasters

The original Dark Horse Coffee Roasters is on Adams Avenue in Normal Heights, and they also have locations in North Park, South Park, Golden Hill, La Mesa, Chula Vista, and Hillcrest.

Dark Horse may be the coolest hipster coffee spot in San Diego with their casual, industrial-inspired design and laid-back local feel.

Whether you choose to hunker down with a laptop at one of their communal tables or snag a spot by the window, you’ll find strong WiFi and plenty of space to focus.

Bonus: They have Skinny Donuts!

See you there!

There you have the 10 best local spots to caffeine up and cram for finals, get some serious work done before a deadline, or prepare for an important meeting without being distracted.

So grab your laptop, put on your most intimidating “don’t talk to me, I’m working” face, and remember—in San Diego, every day is a good day to work hard and caffeinate harder!

See you there, San Diego!
