San Diego Bay Parade of Lights Returns for 55th Year
The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is back for its 55th year, and if you’ve never experienced roughly 80 lavishly decorated boats gliding through the bay while over 100,000 people line the shores, you’re missing one of San Diego’s most iconic holiday traditions.
This year’s theme is “An Out of This World Christmas,” which gives participants plenty of creative freedom to interpret what that means on the water.

A Time-Honored Tradition
The boating community brings this tradition to San Diego year after year, and it’s grown into something that draws both residents and visitors to the bayfront. The best part? There’s no cost to view it. You just need to find a good spot along the route and show up early – the top locations get crowded fast.
This year marks the 7th time the parade will proceed to the pier at Cesar Chavez Park before making the turn to Coronado, which adds another viewing area beyond the traditional spots. That expansion helps spread out the crowds and gives more people optimal views of the decorated boats.

Planning Your Viewing Spot
The parade takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to pass any given point along the route. Here’s the approximate arrival time at various locations:
- Shelter Island (start): 5:30 PM
- Harbor Island: 5:45 – 6:15 PM
- Seaport Village: 6:20 – 6:45 PM
- The Embarcadero: 6:50 – 7:15 PM
- The Pier at Cesar Chavez Park: 7:20 – 7:30 PM
- Ferry Landing on Coronado: 7:40 PM
Knowing these times lets you pick your spot strategically based on where you want to be and what time works best for your schedule. Arriving early matters – the popular locations fill up well before the parade reaches them.

What Makes It Special
There’s something about seeing boats covered in lights and decorations moving through the water that hits differently than traditional holiday displays. The reflections on the bay, the scale of the larger vessels, the creativity people put into their designs – it creates a spectacle that feels uniquely San Diego.
The “An Out of This World Christmas” theme this year should produce some interesting interpretations, especially from participants who go all-in on the concept.
