SeaCo Catch Takes Both “People’s Choice” And “Judges’ Choice” At The 9th Annual Taco TKO For The First Time In Competition History

Sponsored by Hornitos Tequila, the San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival® announces the winners of this year’s Taco TKO Competition, held on Sunday, November 14 at Liberty Station South Promenade. The annual competition brings the city’s top taco makers together to compete head-to-head for the title of San Diego’s Most Awesome Taco.

For the first time in history…

For the People’s Choice Awards, the top prizes went to SeaCo Catch taking first place with 321 votes and winning $500, Sandbar Sports Bar & Grill taking second place with 270 votes and winning $200, and Coco Maya by Miss B’s and Small Town tied for third place with 109 votes each and both winning $100.

SeaCo Catch also took first place for the Judge’s Choice, earning bragging rights and an additional $500 award.

And it’s not even fish!

We figured this had to be a mistake when we first read it, but it’s true: SeaCo Catch’s plant-based, organic, gluten-free, seafood substitute taco has proven to be a delicious alternative to fried fish, making competition history by being the first taco to win both the People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice.

“We are so incredibly grateful to have been sought out and invited to participate in this year’s competition and to win both Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice is overwhelming,” says Chef Mike Perez, at SeaCo Catch. “Our team has been working on this product for four years now. Our vegan fÿsh taco has won five awards since 2019, and we look forward to continue sharing our story and our tacos with California.”

This year’s second place for Judges’ Choice went to SandBar Sports Bar & Grill and third went to Death by Tequila.

Over 750 guests attended this year’s Taco TKO and sampled different tacos from each restaurant, as well as a variety of unique beer, spirits, and tequila stations while enjoying live music from Bulevar Descarga. Judges for this year’s competition included Chef Javier Plascencia from Animalón, Chef Rosie O’Connor from Provecho Grill, Chef Suzette Gresham from Acquerello, Chef Isabel Cruz from Coffee Cup La Jolla, and Scott Koeniz from A Gringo in Mexico.
