Celebrate Children’s Day 2025 at the Japanese Friendship Garden

San Diego’s Japanese Friendship Garden invites families to step into a joyful celebration of childhood, culture, and creativity at Children’s Day 2025—a vibrant day of traditional crafts, games, food, and performances inspired by Japan’s annual holiday honoring kids.

Children's Day at the Japanese Friendship Garden

Fun-Filled Festivities for the Whole Family

Inside the garden’s gates, you can make colorful koinobori (carp streamers), fold origami kabuto (samurai helmets), and dive into classic games like Go.

Experience the traditional Japanese storytelling art of kamishibai, then head over to enjoy kashiwamochi (sweet rice cakes) and dress up in festive yukatas with help from the SD Kimono Club.

Try Your Skills at the #Edamame Champ Challenge

Chopsticks at the ready! Join Wa-Shokuiku’s #Edamame Champ competition at the Upper Garden Gallery and test your skills in a fun food challenge. Winners from this local round may move on to compete in the finals in June.

Inari Sushi Workshop

Roll up your sleeves with Table For Two and learn how to make your own inari sushi—sweet and savory tofu pockets filled with seasoned rice. It’s one of Japan’s most kid-approved foods, and just as fun to make as it is to eat! Available while supplies last.

Live Performance: Japanese Lion Dance

Don’t miss the thrilling Shishimai lion dance—performed to bring good luck and chase away evil spirits. A true highlight of the day!

See you there!

Whether you’re coming for the crafts, the cuisine, or the culture, this annual tradition promises a full day of fun, flavor, and family-friendly celebration.
