Exploring Themes of Identity and Belonging

In “Undocumented Times/ Queer Yearnings,” you’ll encounter art that challenges societal narratives and highlights the dual marginalization faced by those living at the intersection of undocumented and queer identities.

Alexa Vasquez, a trans woman from Oaxaca, Mexico, uses her multidisciplinary talents to explore themes of home, transition, and womanhood through autobiographical, poetic, and political paintings and writings.

Meanwhile, César Miguel Rivera Vega Magallón, a formerly undocumented queer poet from Jalisco, Mexico, captures the psychological and spiritual tolls of migration in his prose and self-portraiture.

Curated by M. Liliana Ramirez, whose personal journey mirrors the artists’ experiences, this exhibition holds a special significance.

Ramirez’s reflections on growing up undocumented in Southern California bring an added layer of authenticity and empathy to the narrative.

“Coming of age undocumented in a predominantly undocumented Latinx immigrant community deeply shaped my immigrant identity and sense of belonging,” she shares.

Bridging Communities Through Art

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with art that bridges communities across citizenship status, race, and sexual orientation.

“Undocumented Times/ Queer Yearnings” is more than an exhibition; it’s a call to expand support networks and create inclusive spaces for Southern California’s immigrant and arts communities. Expect to be moved, challenged, and inspired!
