Oceanside Museum of Art Presents “In Losing Sleep, I Painted” by Mary Jhun

Step into the surreal world of artist Mary Jhun as the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) debuts the “In Losing Sleep, I Painted” exhibition.

Through dreamlike compositions, Jhun explores the connection between sleep patterns, psychology, and personal transformation, blending elements of architecture, nature, and emotion to create layered visual narratives.

Unpacking Emotion Through Art

At the heart of Jhun’s work are her signature figures, “The Girls”—symbolic representations of the ever-evolving self. These figures embody alternate realities, memories, and emotions, offering a glimpse into the artist’s introspective journey.

Her paintings challenge perceptions, inviting us to explore the subconscious and question the boundaries of reality.

A Personal and Transformative Journey

Inspired by her experience using a sleep machine, Jhun’s latest work examines how disrupted sleep cycles shape creativity and perception. By interweaving organic and architectural forms, she crafts “emotional self-portraits” that reflect both personal and universal themes of growth, memory, and adaptation.

A self-taught artist originally from the Philippines, Jhun has made her mark on San Diego and Northern California with murals that fuse identity and imagination. She will also be a featured artist at the SoCal Asian & Pacific Islander Festival on April 26, 2025, at the Oceanside Civic Center.
