Convergence: How Eduardo Chillida’s Epic Exhibition is Transforming SDMA This Summer

Eduardo Chillida: Convergence arrives at The San Diego Museum of Art this summer, honoring one of postwar Europe’s most celebrated sculptors.

Presented in celebration of Chillida’s centenary, this landmark show invites us into a world of space, material, and emotion through more than 85 works—many of which have never before been displayed together in the U.S.

Eduardo Chillida: Convergence

Renowned for his use of forged iron, wood, alabaster, and clay, Chillida’s work explores the harmony between humanity, nature, and the void. Convergence features colossal sculptures, rare drawings, and an immersive VR experience that transports us to his iconic Comb of the Wind installation on the rocky Basque coast.

Highlights of the Exhibition

  • Rare Works Reunited: For the first time since 1966, Chillida’s monumental wood sculptures from the Rough Chant series are reunited—towering testaments to his deep respect for material and place.
  • Sculptural Philosophy in Action: Explore his unique approach to form, space, and negative space through a collection that reflects decades of work and philosophical inquiry.
  • Virtual Reality Experience: A multi-sensory installation that captures the sight, sound, and scent of Chillida’s installation on the Spanish coastline. (Additional $7 ticket for non-members)

Special Events and Programming

  • Art Party Opening Night – July 31
  • Public Lecture with Mikel Chillida – August 1
  • Hands-On Public Workshops – Dates to be announced
  • Exhibition Catalogue – Essays from global leaders in art, architecture, and music
