Spend a Free Sunday With Contemporary Art at MCASD
Here’s a Sunday plan that costs nothing: spend it with contemporary art. On the second Sunday of every month, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego opens its doors for free to everyone, no reservations needed.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a longtime member, it’s an easy way to see what’s on view along the coast in La Jolla. With exhibitions, a sculpture garden, and family activities all in one stop, it’s easy to fill the afternoon.

Wander Every Gallery for Free
Free admission covers the whole museum, so wander as long as you like. You can explore Visiones Nocturnas, Hometown Heroes, Prospect 2026, the Collection Galleries, and the Sculpture Garden.
Pick a favorite, or try them all. There’s plenty of room to take your time with each one. Start in the galleries, then step outside to the Sculpture Garden for a breath of fresh air.
Where Nightlife Meets Contemporary Art
Visiones Nocturnas: Queer Nightlife in Contemporary Art looks at how dance clubs, dive bars, backyards, and bathhouses become important spaces for queer joy, community, and possibility.
It’s a bold exhibition that connects contemporary art with the places where people come together after dark. Give it some time, because there’s plenty to take in.

Last Chance for Hometown Heroes
The Dean Collection Presents: Hometown Heroes celebrates its final day on display. It features photography by local Latinx photographers MJ Pimentel, Oscar Cruz, and Chata.
Their work captures everyday life and cultural pride in San Diego’s Barrio Logan, offering a close-up look at the people and moments that define the neighborhood. If you haven’t seen it yet, this is the day to go.
Draw, Paint, and Print Together
Bring the kids for Play Day, the museum’s family series. Together you’ll draw scenes filled with local nature and make monoprints with tempera paints.
It’s DIY artmaking for the whole family, and you can head into the galleries afterward. Kids get to make something of their own, and everyone leaves with a bit of art to take home.
See you there!
Bring the kids, bring a friend, and take your time with the galleries. It’s a free way to wrap up the weekend feeling inspired.
