Ten Years of Barbusa: Little Italy’s Sicilian Table That Keeps Drawing Us Back

There are restaurants you visit once and forget, and then there are the ones that become part of how you think about a city. Barbusa is the second kind. Since opening its doors in Little Italy in 2016, this Sicilian-inspired dining room has earned its place as one of San Diego’s most sought-after tables – and this July, it’s celebrating a full decade.

The Family Behind the Food

The story of Barbusa can’t really be told without the Busalacchi family, who have been bringing Sicilian food and hospitality to San Diego for more than 40 years.

Founded by Sicilian-born Joe Busalacchi Sr., the family’s presence in Little Italy stretches back 30 years, and the next generation – brothers PJ, Joey Jr., and Mike – now run day-to-day operations across their growing collection of restaurants.

Today, the Busalacchi portfolio spans four Little Italy concepts: Barbusa, Nonna, Lala, and Café Zucchero. Each one reflects a different facet of the family’s culinary roots, but together they’ve helped shape the neighborhood into the nationally recognized dining destination it is today.

What Makes Barbusa Worth the Wait

Walk into Barbusa on any given evening and the energy is immediate – the room buzzes, the bar is animated, and the smell of house-made pasta tells you exactly where you are. The kitchen leans on Sicilian tradition: handcrafted pastas, bold flavors, and the kind of cooking that feels both deeply considered and genuinely comforting.

The hospitality carries the same warmth. This is a family-run operation in the truest sense, and that shows in the way the restaurant feels – not just polished, but personal. It’s the kind of place where regulars come back year after year, and where first-timers leave already thinking about their next visit.

A Decade of Defining the Neighborhood

Ten years is a meaningful mark in the restaurant industry – more so in a neighborhood like Little Italy, which has evolved dramatically over the past decade. Barbusa has grown alongside it, remaining relevant not by chasing trends but by staying true to what it does best.

The result is a restaurant that locals genuinely love and one that continues to attract national attention, drawing celebrities and food writers alike. As Little Italy’s profile has risen, Barbusa has been part of the reason why.

See you there!

Whether you’re a longtime regular or still haven’t scored that reservation, Barbusa’s 10th anniversary is the perfect reason to finally make it happen.
