Ten Years of Barbusa: Little Italy’s Sicilian Table That Keeps Drawing Us Back

The story of Barbusa can’t really be told without the Busalacchi family, who have been bringing Sicilian food and hospitality to San Diego for more than 40 years.

Founded by Sicilian-born Joe Busalacchi Sr., the family’s presence in Little Italy stretches back 30 years, and the next generation – brothers PJ, Joey Jr., and Mike – now run day-to-day operations across their growing collection of restaurants.

Today, the Busalacchi portfolio spans four Little Italy concepts: Barbusa, Nonna, Lala, and Café Zucchero. Each one reflects a different facet of the family’s culinary roots, but together they’ve helped shape the neighborhood into the nationally recognized dining destination it is today.
