7 Reasons to Head Up to Big Bear This Summer
When the heat starts creeping in across Southern California, Big Bear Lake is always the answer. At over 6,700 feet of elevation, it’s cooler, quieter, and packed with things to do from late May through the summer. Here’s what’s on the calendar this season.
1. A Spartan Race on the Mountain
The Spartan Trifecta Weekend brings obstacle-course racing to Big Bear’s rugged terrain across two days in mid-May.
Whether you’re a seasoned racer or just looking for a challenge against a genuinely stunning mountain backdrop, it’s a strong way to kick off the summer.
2. Three Weekends of Maifest
Big Bear Lake Maifest is expanding this year into three weekends of Bavarian-style celebration – beer, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities in the mountains.
If you’ve been before, it’s worth going back. If you haven’t, this is the year.

3. A Fishing Tournament With Real Money on the Line
The Reel Ale Festival and Fishin’ for $50K Trout Tournament runs across a late-May weekend, combining craft beer, lakeside entertainment, and a two-day fishing competition where tagged trout carry cash prizes.
Even if you don’t fish, the lakeside atmosphere alone makes it worth the drive up.
4. National Trails Day on the Mountain
Big Bear’s trail system is one of its best assets, and National Trails Day is the perfect excuse to explore it.
Guided hikes and volunteer opportunities are organized by the Southern California Mountains Foundation, giving us a chance to give back to the trails we love while spending a day in the mountains.
5. A Wine Walk Through the Village
The Big Bear Lake Village Wine Walk returns in late June, inviting us to wander through the village while sampling regional wines. It’s a relaxed, social afternoon that makes good use of everything the village has to offer.

6. A Multi-Day Backcountry Adventure
Highlander Adventure Big Bear is a multi-day outdoor experience focused on hiking, gear, and backcountry skills.
Participants set up camp at checkpoints along the routes and connect with fellow hikers over yoga sessions, sustainability talks, and music-filled afternoons.
It’s the kind of experience that’s hard to replicate anywhere else in Southern California.

7. The Mountain Itself
Beyond the events, Big Bear Lake delivers all summer long – hiking and biking trails, boating on the lake, live music, pop-up events, and local gatherings throughout the season.
It’s one of those destinations that rewards repeat visits, and summer is its best season.
