Birch Aquarium Announces Living Seas Transformation

The beloved Hall of Fishes is getting a major makeover, and we’re all invited to the grand reveal. Living Seas, the aquarium’s most ambitious exhibition since it opened its doors in 1992, is set to make a splash next summer.

This reimagined space promises to take us on an unforgettable journey through the Pacific Ocean, igniting our love for nature and filling us with ocean optimism.

Living Seas Exhibition

One Last Swim Down Memory Lane

Before we dive into the future, let’s take a moment to appreciate the past. The Hall of Fishes has been the backdrop for countless “oohs” and “aahs” from over 12 million visitors.

If you’ve got a favorite finned friend or a special memory, now’s your chance to share it. The aquarium is collecting stories from guests during select dates before the renovations begin on September 29.

What’s in Store? A Pacific Adventure Like No Other

Living Seas isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a full-on aquatic adventure. Here’s what we can look forward to:

  • Expanded viewing windows that’ll make you feel like you’re swimming with the fishes
  • Next-gen digital displays bringing the ocean to life in ways we’ve never seen before
  • Immersive projections that’ll transport you straight into the heart of the Pacific

Our journey starts in the chilly waters of the Pacific Northwest, featuring a mesmerizing Giant Pacific Octopus habitat and hypnotic jellies.

Then, we’ll cruise down to Coastal California, where the iconic Giant Kelp Forest gets a fresh look, and a reimagined Scripps Pier experience gives us a peek into cutting-edge ocean research.

Our final stop? The vibrant Tropical Pacific, complete with stunning corals, lively reefs, and a lush mangrove habitat.

Behind the Scenes: A Mammoth Move

Moving nearly 4,000 aquatic residents is no small feat. Jenn Nero, the Senior Director of Animal Care, Science and Conservation, gives us the inside scoop: “We strategically plan every aspect, from life support systems and animal transfers to preventative medicine, ensuring each animal’s unique needs are addressed.”

The big move kicks off on September 3, with star attractions like the Giant Pacific Octopus and the rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtle getting VIP treatment in their temporary digs behind the scenes.
