Civico 1845 is Officially America’s Best Vegan-Friendly Restaurant

San Diego’s Civico 1845 has been honored as America’s Best Vegan-Friendly Restaurant in the 2024 VegNews Restaurant Awards, a prestigious recognition celebrating its exceptional hospitality and groundbreaking plant-based offerings.

Nestled in Little Italy, this award-winning eatery continues to delight diners with its authentic Calabrian flavors and innovative vegan menu, catering to both vegans and omnivores alike.

America’s Best Vegan-Friendly Restaurant

A Plant-Based Pioneer in Little Italy

For nearly a decade, Civico 1845 has set itself apart in San Diego’s culinary scene. Owned by brothers Dario and Pietro Gallo, the restaurant offers a dual-menu concept that balances tradition and innovation.

Vegan standouts like baked almond ricotta, fried zucchini blossoms, and eggplant parmigiana shine alongside classic Italian dishes, making Civico 1845 a beloved destination for food enthusiasts.

“We’re passionate about bringing fresh, authentic Calabrian cuisine to our community,” said Executive Chef Pietro Gallo. “Our vegan menu has been key to our success, and we’re thrilled to see it recognized on a national level.”

Expanding the Civico Legacy

The Gallo brothers extended their plant-based vision to Los Angeles this year with the opening of Civico 2064, debuting their “Calabrifornian” concept.

With nearly half the menu dedicated to vegan options, the new restaurant showcases their commitment to innovation and inclusivity while honoring their Calabrian roots.

Recognized Locally and Globally

Civico 1845 is not just a local favorite—it’s globally recognized. The restaurant is one of only four San Diego eateries ranked by Gambero Rosso International, a definitive guide to authentic Italian dining.

Additionally, it was named an official ambassador of Italian cuisine by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, further cementing its reputation as a standout destination.
