Ukraine’s DakhaBrakha
To our great relief, the Ukrainian folk “ethno-chaos” group, DakhaBrakha, whose members had been caught up in the conflict of the Russian invasion of their homeland, are now confirmed to have left Ukraine safely and will be able to fulfill their concert tour dates in the U.S., including The Conrad on April 22.

Silkroad Ensemble
The ProtoStar Series continues April 3 with the acclaimed Silkroad Ensemble, bringing us a sadly timely emotional accounting of home in a time of conflict.
This audio-visual performance, conceived by Syrian composer and clarinetist, Kinan Azmeh, and Syrian Armenian visual artist, Kevork Mourad, is an impressionistic reflection on the unity of loss, longing, and the impact of tragedy on our sense of “home.”
Rather than follow a narrative, the artists use the counterpoint between image and sound to document ‘home’ within specific moments in Syria’s recent history.

Matthias Goerne | Seong-Jin Cho
On April 7, German baritone Matthias Goerne, one of the world’s most renowned Lieder singers, is joined by internationally sought-after pianist, Seong-Jin Cho, as part of our Special Events series. Both are Deutsche Grammophon recording artists, and Cho is a returning LJMS Discovery Artist. They will perform a selection of songs by Wolf, Pfitzner, and Strauss, and Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder, delighting fans of German art song. This is Goerne’s sole Southern California appearance this season.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason | Isata Kanneh-Mason
Where to start to describe Sheku Kanneh-Mason (cello) and Isata Kanneh-Mason (piano), siblings and members of the brilliantly talented and accomplished Kanneh-Mason family?
These young phenoms have already won dozens of awards between them, and Sheku was even invited to play at the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle in 2018. Maybe that’s why he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours, for services to music.
Their April 23 concert as part of our Revelle Chamber Music Series includes works by K. Khachaturian, Shostakovich, Britten, and Bridge.

Sweden’s Queen of Swing, Gunhild Carling brings the month to a close on April 28. Gunhild’s sublime showmanship shines whether she’s singing favorite jazz standards or playing one of many instruments, influenced by Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holiday.
She combines extraordinary skills on trumpet and trombone with vaudeville stunts, like playing three trumpets at once!
