The Conrad Opens 54th Season With Exciting Debuts From Chamber, Jazz, And Americana Artists
Jolla Music Society (LJMS) launches its 54th season in October with a series of exciting debuts at The Conrad in La Jolla. From jazz and Americana to the finest in chamber music, the first few weeks of the 2022–23 season offer many chances to discover new talent and welcome some of the greatest artists in chamber music.
Saturday, October 8
The Revelle Chamber Music Series opens the season on Saturday, October 8, 2022, with the LJMS debut of the Apollon Musagète Quartet, with superstar pianist Garrick Ohlsson at the piano. First-prize winners of the 2008 ARD Competition, the Apollon Musagète Quartet has rapidly become an established feature on the European musical scene, captivating the public and press alike.
Sunday, October 23
Garrick Ohlsson returns after triumphant performances in LJMS’ SummerFest 2022 concerts. On Sunday, October 23, the exciting young British classical saxophonist, Jess Gillam, brings her talent, artistry, personality, and showmanship to The Conrad in her LJMS debut. Forging her own adventurous path since she shot to fame becoming the first saxophonist to reach the finals of the BBC’s Young Musician competition, she is the youngest ever soloist to perform at the Last Night of the Proms. Her wildly entertaining Discovery Series program, accompanied by Thomas Weaver at the piano, will leave audiences seeing the saxophone in a whole different light.
Friday, October 28
Since forming in 2014, The War and Treaty have amassed a following as eclectic as their sound itself, a bluesy fusion of Southern soul, gospel, country, and rock-and-roll. On Friday, October 28, they bring their thrilling vitality to LJMS’ Global Roots program in their local debut, spotlighting their heart-on-sleeve storytelling.
Known for live shows that are revival-like in their intensity, the husband-and-wife team of Michael Trotter, Jr., and Tanya Blount-Trotter create an exhilarating exchange of energy with their audience, a dynamic they’ve brought to the stage in opening for the legendary Al Green and touring with the likes of Brandi Carlile and Jason Isbell.
Saturday, October 29
In partnership with San Diego Unified School District’s Visual and Performing Arts Department, JazzReach’s critically acclaimed resident ensemble, Metta Quintet, culminates a four-day educational residency with students from Mission Bay High School’s acclaimed music programs on Saturday, October 29 as part of the ConRAD Kids Series.
A cohesive, tight-knit unit featuring some of today’s most esteemed creative artists, Metta Quintet is fueled by a collective, open-minded musical curiosity and dedicated to exploring new artistic territory while maintaining a passionate commitment to arts education, fostering new audiences, and nurturing young talent.
