Paul Simon’s Quiet Celebration Tour Stops at The Rady Shell
Paul Simon is bringing his “A Quiet Celebration Tour” to The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park this summer. After a strong US run last year, Simon was inspired to take the tour back out on the road.
He chose some of North America’s best outdoor venues for the next leg. San Diego made the list.

A Show in Two Parts
The evening opens with a full performance of Seven Psalms, Simon’s Grammy-nominated album. It is a 33-minute continuous piece that drew considerable critical attention when it was released.
Variety described it as “quietly stunning…unlike any other Simon album,” while Rock Cellar called it “a stunning achievement from an artist with a career full of them.” It’s the kind of music that rewards your full attention. Furthermore, hearing it in an open-air setting along San Diego Bay feels like exactly the right context.
After a short intermission, the show shifts into a career-spanning set of greatest hits and deep cuts. Decades of material, performed live – there’s a lot to look forward to in that second half.
The Full Ensemble
Simon brings a deep lineup to the stage: Edie Brickell on vocals, Mark Stewart and Gyan Riley on guitar, Bakithi Kumalo on bass, Andy Snitzer on saxophone, Jamey Haddad on percussion, Mick Rossi on piano and keys, Matt Chamberlin on drums, Nancy Stagnitta on flute, Caleb Burhans on viola, and Eugene Friesen on cello.
That range of instrumentation gives both halves of the show – the meditative and the celebratory – something to work with.

The Rady Shell Setting
The Rady Shell’s spot along the waterfront is one of the city’s best places to catch live music. An evening like this one, moving between quiet, focused listening and singalong moments, suits the outdoor venue well.
